It looks like the charger doesn't have a switch. How well can you trust it not to draw energy from the battery even when the engine is off?

No, the charger does not have a switch. I have connected the charger directly to the battery and have not noticed anything negative so far. After two months of "hibernation" it started up without any problems, so you can connect it without hesitation. You can still charge it when the engine is switched off, but I wouldn't overdo it.
i have connected the charger via the ignition plus. if i turn the ignition key, the charger has no power and cannot drain the battery.
