The 7.1 is not a version number but a designation for the surround sound, as the headphones simulate 7 normal and one bass channel instead of the 2 channels in stereo or 5.1 in other surround systems. But as I said, the surround sound in these headphones is only simulated, which works quite well, because otherwise you would need 8 speakers for 7.1 surround. Like almost all other headphones, these only have 2 speakers.
