Is there a pen for this iPad that can be used to write directly by hand? (Similar to the Apple Pencil, which only works for the Pro series). If so, how well do these pens work? I would like to use this function, but the Ipad Pro is relatively expensive.

Yes, there are pens that work with any touchscreen, e.g. this one: https://www.digitec.ch/de/s1/product/adonit-jot-pro-20-stylus-5069036. It works for writing, but is less suitable for drawing, as it is not pressure-sensitive. there are also cheaper alternatives, e.g. this one:
