Is the Zhiyun Smooth-Q compatible with the iPhone X? Despite the 5.85 inch display (excl. housing)?

Yes, it's easy. Don't forget to balance it properly, otherwise the results won't be as good and the battery will run down more quickly.
With my iPhone X it doesn't work for a minute and then it goes into stand-by mode, with Samsung no problems.
