Is the watch compatible with an iphone or other smartphone?

Android works via Garmin Connect. It also works on the Mac. There is certainly a Garmin app for iPhone. I'm not sure about Applefit Sync. Google Fit Sync only works with a diversion via a third-party app.

Yes, as long as the app 'Garmin Connect' is running on it, it is compatible, currently iOS and Android.
