What would I need to connect a speaker to it anyway? Is a USB 2.0 to jack socket the right thing to do? Or what else can I do?

Yes exactly, no jack and unfortunately your suggestion (USB to audio jack) would not work because it requires a soundcard (meaning it only works with a PC).

Yes, that is correct. The monitor does not have a jack connection. But I don't know how you can connect a speaker with a jack.
