I currently have two gaming PCs with one GTX680 and one GTX1070.

An RTX 2080 and the i7-9700 can play all current triple-A games at very high settings.
The Alienware can be set to 120Hz, which is highly recommended. The screen also supports G-Sync via Displayport, which ensures that you always have a smooth gaming experience, even at lower and more fluctuating FPS.

A GTX 1070 would still deliver a pretty decent FPS in many games, but in the full 3440x1440 resolution, the RTX 2080 clearly stands out.

(I currently use the AW3418 on an RTX 2080).
