In the Google Play Store, the required ZY app has 1 star. All the ratings are around total disfunctionality. Does this thing work at all?

Yes and no. If the app is really important to you, I might recommend waiting until there are a few more updates out. But if you can handle the basics of the app (and its limitations/problems), or even work with GoPro or just the phone without the app, then it shouldn't be a problem.
