In a room with many nooks and crannies (80m2), which is used as a bar, I would like to play music in the background. How many SONOS Play 1s can I run simultaneously in one room? Desired: 8 pcs.
I can only agree with digitalflash: 8 boxes are definitely too many. I'm always amazed at what these little things can do! I would also start with 3 boxes, and if that's not enough, just buy more.
But to answer your question: You can operate a maximum of 32 "components" in a Sonos network. Components are speakers and bridges. If you don't need a bridge, your limit is 32 speakers.
Of course it depends on HOW angled the room is, but I think 8 units is definitely too much of a good thing and not necessary. If the room is like an "L", for example, I would put 1 unit at each end of the "L" and 1 unit in the outer bend of the "L" (I know, it's quite difficult to describe). That means 3, maybe 4 at the most. But the good thing about the Sonos system is that you can easily expand it if necessary. PS: for such a case, I would even consider buying 3 pcs. Play 5 (instead of 8 Play 1).
