Question about SanDisk Extreme Pro Portable V1

I would like to use the SSD with my MacBook Air early 2014, macOS version 10.15.6. The device only has a USB A port, not a USB C port. Can I still use the SSD to its full extent or do I have to assume that the read and write speed will be limited or that compatibility problems will occur due to the age of my device and the connection? Thank you!

Helpful answer

I do not expect compatibility problems. The read and write speed on the MacBook Air early 2014 is given by the MacBook interfaces as follows: 2 USB ports up to 5Gbps + 1 Thunderbolt port up to 10Gbps (source MacTracker). The read rate of the Sandisk is 1Gbps and is thus not slowed down by the MacBook.
I am very satisfied with the device.

In my opinion, Gusti's answer is only half correct.
The specifications of the Macbook are correct, but the SSD cannot read 1000 mbit/s, it can read 1000 MB/s. That is the equivalent of about 8000 mbit/s or 8 GBit/s. The maximum transfer rate of USB 3.1 (first gen) is 5 GBit/s. This means that a good 600 MB/s transfer rate is still possible (instead of 1000MB/s).
But to reassure you if you have already bought: your model has a Thunderbolt port (version 1 or 2 I'm not quite sure). This allows 10GBit/s or 1250 MB/s (with the appropriate adapter you SHOULD be able to connect the SSD). Unfortunately, the specifications of USB 3 and its compatibility with the different Thunderbolt versions are very confusing and terribly complicated in terms of naming.

Conclusion: with a Thunderbolt 2 to USB C adapter you SHOULD be able to use the SSD to its full potential. However, since I have never tried this myself and the names of the USB ports on the internet are often wrong, I cannot guarantee this 100%.
