As far as I know, this adapter only works in one direction: the DP connector must be the source. So you can't use it the way you intend. Unfortunately, there are very few adapters that can do this (and they are usually quite expensive). However, most monitors have more than one DisplayPort connector, so you may be able to use one. However, if only DP is an option, you can try these adapters, for example:
Delock HDMI to (DP, 24.50cm)
Delock 62496 HDMI to (DP)
Club 3D HDMI to (DP, 18cm)
All of these products are active adapters and therefore require power from a USB cable (supplied). These adapters support up to 4096x2160 at 30Hz or 1920 x 1080p at 120Hz.
