I would like to buy an Apple Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt cable to connect my two Macs. An iMac (old) with a new generation Mac Book Pro. I am looking for a USB - C to Thunderbolt adapter. Is this the one? I'm confused. Between Thunderbolt 2, 3, 4. I have a Thunderbolt input on the old iMac but it's on the new one that I need an adapter. Can you help me?

To connect two Macs, you need an adapter to Ethernet on each Mac and an Ethernet cable between the two. So Mac #1 -> Thunderbolt adapter - Ethernet -> Ethernet cable -> Ethernet adapter - USB-C -> Mac #2
