I used an "ancient" cable, RJ11 to R&M telephone plug, then with an adapter cable back to RJ11.
It is important that only the 2 centre contacts of the 6/4-pin plug are used.
If your cable connects the contacts in twisted pairs and crosses them, it will not work.
The cable should connect the contacts straight, perhaps best measured with an ohm-meter.
