I have never had a dual-SIM mobile phone, so this perhaps somewhat stupid question: Can two SIM cards from different countries be inserted at the same time (specifically: Switzerland and Israel)?

Yes, you can have two SIM cards installed in the device at the same time and also use them. The important thing is that the SIM cards have the NANO-SIM format.
