Question about Satechi USB 3.0 hub in Mac design

I have an IMac with USB 2 and a new hard drive that only works with USB 3. Can I connect these two things with this hub?

If the IMac does not support USB3, then the USB hub cannot change anything, you can only connect USB2 things to the IMac. However, most USB3 devices are backwards compatible, so a hard drive would be slow.
