I got two WD My Book (16 TB) and connected them both! Both external hard drives work but both make a loud knocking noise about every 5 seconds! Every 5 seconds!!! It sounds like a fat bumblebee hitting a window pane! Is this normal with these hard drives? I have dozens of external hard drives, including WD Western Digital, but none of them has ever made such a cracking noise! What is the reason for this? Is there anything I can do? Can I return the hard drives? It's extremely annoying! The hard drives are formatted as exFAT! Presumably nothing changes if I format them as NTFS?
Hello. Formatting doesn't matter. It probably knocks the read heads to the stop, which causes this noise. This shortens the life of the HDDs. Greetings
I think this is a production error. It may well be that both hard drives come from the same production round and that is why this error occurs in both. Another possibility would be to ask WD directly, although I don't know who does the distribution in Switzerland. I suggest you make a small film with sound, which you can then send or show.
The hard disk does not make these noises in my case. Sounds like a defect to me. But then both of them sound strange again. I've already tried it on another computer. I would send it back.
