I was able to do some research and in this case the charging cradle is for charging the headset. It's tidy and doesn't lie on the table. There are other models where the cradle also serves as a base to which you connect a landline phone or other devices that can't connect via Bluetooth or USB.
The Jabra Evolve2 65 headset is a very solid and good choice for the application you describe, and I would have selected the same. If you want better sound and a larger ear cup, there is also the 85 headset from Jabra:
