How does it work with charging ? Rechargeable batteries, does that mean it behaves like a rechargeable battery, i.e. when the batteries are empty simply recharge them via cable ?

Yes, these Apple products are simply recharged via USB. This has the advantage that you can continue to work with the keyboard via cable when the battery is empty.
