Does anyone know whether the base plate for mounting is identical for both sizes? In other words, can I replace an L with an M without having to change the base plate on the ceiling?

Unfortunately, I don't know. But I suspect not, as the side that is turned into the base plate is only made of plastic and then the distance to the edge of the size L would be further than with size M and therefore the lamp might not be quite as stable... But that's just a guess. Is the lamp also available without a base plate?

No, I don't know that. But why is that a problem? Why not just screw the base plate to the ceiling?
