Hello, I ordered this Tamron 18-400mm lens. It looks very good. But what struck me is that the 400mm focal length is somehow not correct. I photographed the same object at home from the same distance with an old Canon EF 70-300mm, the new Canon EF 100-400mm and the Tamron 18-400mm. What I noticed is that the object was even slightly smaller with the Tamron than with the 300mm of the old Canon. The object was much closer with the 400mm Canon lens than with the 400mm Tamron. Is there an explanation for this? Photographed with a Canon eos 77d. Many thanks
The lens has a relatively strong focus shift, i.e. due to the movement of the lenses when focusing, the image section varies. If you focus on a more distant object, this effect should be less pronounced. The 400mm focal length should be correct with a focus in ∞.
I can't give you the explanation either. The reason for buying the Tamron 18-400 was the elimination of the various lens changes and thus a question of weight when travelling. To be honest, it was also a question of price. I gave the lens to my son and he was very happy with it on his trip to America. Unfortunately, I am not a professional photographer and am not familiar with all aspects of the art of photography.
