I don't have a CD drive on my laptop. Does this mean that the scanner is not compatible with my PC? Do I only get the OCR software on CD?

Take a look at the quick installation guide that is attached under the Digitec product description.
Click on the link on the right-hand side of picture 2 and go to the Epson website. Enter the product and search for the installer. You will then eventually come to the download. You still have to search a bit.
