For me, the sensor does not seem to do anything. I can hold my finger over the sensor or hold the sensor directly in front of the light and I can't see any change in the light. Is this normal or is the sensor defective? Is there a way to tell if the sensor is really broken?

At first I also thought that the sensor was not working at all. (The documentation does not give any indication of the correct placement.) After some experimentation, I came to the conclusion that the sensor does work - just not as I expected.
The sensor measures the ambient light when the car mode is switched on. If you cover the sensor and press the auto button, the light is different than if you leave it uncovered and press the button. The difference is just noticeable (more precisely: for me about 150lx measured with an app on the smartphone - yes I know very nerdy 🤓. Covered 500lx - uncovered, so that the sensor is also illuminated by the lamp approx. 350lx).

It doesn't seem to work for me either. It is always full light output no matter how bright or dark it is. Set it manually. But yes, for this price it is rather questionable.
