Does the ssd work on a wifi slot on the mainboard?

No. The M.2 slot has different "keys" which is like a little notch in the card that fits into the slot. M.2 WiFi cards are keyed type "E", while storage M.2 will be keyed type B, M, or B+M. They are not interchangeable.
