Question about Microsoft Surface Pro Signature Keyboard with Slim Pen 2
Does the keyboard have to be connected directly to the Surface to work or does it work and connect even if the two are a little distance apart?

As described in the specifications, the keyboard only connects via the physical docking. A transmission via bluetooth is not provided.
However, Digitec has such Surface-compatible keyboards on sale.
