Does the G512 also need two USB ports like the G413?

Yes
The keyboard itself only needs one USB connector(!), the second connector is merely for the USB socket on the keyboard to be looped through to the computer.
This makes it easy to plug in a USB stick to the keyboard without having to reach around the back of the PC case, or to connect the wireless receiver of your mouse directly to the keyboard, etc.
