I can offer you the Huawei Mediapad M5 as a comparison (similar hardware, same software). This reads large sticks without any problems and can even operate external 2.5" hard drives without their own power supply, which should also work with the P20 Pro. I don't know exactly what the capacity is, but 1TB and 2TB HDDs work perfectly, 8TB does not.

I connected a 2.5 inch 2 TB HDD to the Galaxy Tab S3 via Type C and it worked perfectly.
On the Galaxy S8+ as well, then the Huawei P20 Pro should also have no problems.
