Does it work if the camera lens isn't in the middle of the smartphone but on the side, like most current smartphones?
Yes, it can work, but you have to move the phone to get the camera over the hole. There's still the problem of distance, which can be partially corrected with the zoom. For my part, I've slightly modified the case so that the smartphone is a little higher up. The important thing is the lighting cell.
