Does anyone know if this SSD is compatible with the H97M-E motherboard? According to the manual, it has an "M.2 Socket 3". And does it need a heat sink with it?

Helpful answer

Hello Markus,
you also had the 840 on an AHCI SATA port! I am of the opinion that the NVME protocol is supported! This is also supported by the fact that the NVMe's are mentioned on the "Crucial page" for your board! see here:
https://www.crucial.com/compatible...
All clear!? ;-)

Hello Andreas, thank you very much for the quick answer and the tips, they sound convincing - and they are not that expensive! But I'm not sure whether my board with the "m.2 socket 3" supports the NVMe protocol; so far I have an 840 EVO with AHCI (SATA) as a boot SSD. What do you think? Sorry, I'm not that up-to-date anymore and your theory links have rather confused me...

Hello Markus,
You probably need something like this:
Samsung 970 EVO (500GB, M.2 2280)
or
Samsung 970 EVO Plus (500GB, M.2 2280) (writes faster)
the board would probably support a SATA SSD (860 EVO) as well, but then you can just leave the M.2 story alone and work with "normal" 2.5" SATA SSD's, because it wouldn't help in terms of speed!
see some theory here:
https://www.hardwareschotte.de/magazin...
https://www.elektronik-kompendium.de/sites...
https://www.delock.de/infothek...
The "airflow" above the mainboard in a PC case is actually quite sufficient, so no heat sink is needed, moreover the modules are not very sensitive to heat and it is absolutely normal for them to be hot rather than "just warm" in operation.
I hope I could help!
Have fun & greetings
Andreas
