Does anyone know if this device is comfortable for cutting head hair WITHOUT an attachment?

Yes, very pleasant. I cut my own hair directly without the attachment. The first ten seconds might be a bit cold ;) but the "cutting head" is not rough but feels soft, if that's what you mean.
