Do you have to use rechargeable batteries for the device or can normal AA batteries also be used?

They work, I can charge my mobile phone to half full with a pack of AA Duracell batteries in an emergency. Recharging is then logically not possible if they are disposable batteries.

Normal batteries should also work. But be careful, they are not rechargeable because of the danger of overheating. Greetings Reto
