Did I read that correctly? You can't have a single Earbud in your ear, you always have to plug both in for it to work?
That would be the killer criterion, sound, comfort and everything else aside.
I often only have one in for various reasons, and I want to keep it that way.

Hey, only one in works, but it always has to be the right one thanks to the absolutely brilliant designers at Bose. Apparently they saved a few cents here and only fully equipped the right earbud, the left one gets its signal from the right earbud.

This was fixed with a software update. Now it finally works without problems.
You can use it independently.

I can use both the left and the right one individually. When I take out the other one, I pause for a moment, simply tap once and it continues.
