Can you connect an old record player directly to these speakers or do you need a preamplifier?

Depends on the turntable. Normally you still need a phono preamplifier.
The speakers have a chinch line input. So it depends on your turntable what kind of signal it gives. Line or phono. In the latter case, you need a preamplifier or mixer that has this integrated.
