can this mouse also be used without the nano receiver, i.e. via Bluetooth, or is this receiver necessary?

No, the M220 only works with the nano receiver. If you need a silent mouse with Bluetooth, take a look at the M590 from Logitech. It works via Bluetooth as well as via the nano receiver.
