can this bulb (in addition to being used with the Hue Bridge) also be operated in the normal way using the conventional on/off switch?

Yes, you can. However, you can only switch it on and off. If you want to use the dimming function, you need a suitable switch, such as this one: Philips Hue Wireless Dimmer Switch
You can also connect it directly to the lamp and then you don't need a bridge.
