Can the USB-C port also be used for data transfer or is it only for charging? I would also like to connect USB-C accessories to the hub.

The USB-C is mainly for data transfer, but you can also use it to power a notebook ;-)
How else would you use all the connections like USB, HDMI, LAN, etc)?
