Can the Playbase also be used as a PC speaker, e.g. under a 27" or 32" monitor, or does that make little sense?

This is possible, provided you have an optical connection. Personally, I wouldn't recommend this solution, because the sound image is only fully developed at a distance. I would rather consider a solution from Logitech, a product from the Z series, depending on your budget.
