Can the macro keys be used as independent keys? Because I don't want to write macros but only use them as extended keys (like on the mouse e.g. the M5 etc.).

Yes, you can assign functions to the macro keys in the Steelseries Engine 3.
There are a number of options, apart from a few mac/win OS commands, you can also assign simple alphabetical letters.
