Can the gimbal also be controlled via the original camera app? Or is the Zhiyun app absolutely necessary?

This is possible, but you lose certain functions such as object tracking and others. You can also attach a GoPro and use that. I'm not sure if you can use the trigger on the Gimball if you don't use the app.
