Can it play and charge at the same time? I want to have an MP in the car without thinking about the battery all the time.

When connecting via the micro-USB port, you have two functions to choose from: "Charge & Transfer" and "Charge & Play". The latter allows you to listen to music while charging the battery. This should also not be a problem via the 3.5 mm jack connection.
