The Edge 1040 "only" comes with pre-installed maps of Europe as standard. The maps for South America, among others, can be downloaded and installed free of charge.

Of course you can do that. You just have to be sure that you choose the right maps / region and load them accordingly. If it's a hiking or cycling tour, I strongly recommend loading the maps from Komoot
