Are there separate "left" and "right" bulbs or can the bulb be mounted on the left or right side of each model? If the former, how can I order a left plus a right?

That is correct, as of 2018, it has two holes, the unused one being covered by the bezel. It can be mounted on the left or right.

No, the light source is always on the left-hand side.
