Especially when using lead-free solders, there is an increased formation of oxides on the surface of the soldering tip. These oxides must be specifically removed, as they quickly lead to a black, non-wettable separation layer. The conventional cleaning method with a wet sponge can cause a shock-like temperature drop, thereby shortening the lifespan of the soldering tip. In the Weller WDC Dry Cleaner, a special spiral wool is used for cleaning the soldering tip. For coarse cleaning, the contaminated old solder is tapped against a soft edge into the collection container. Fine cleaning is then achieved by wiping or twisting the soldering tip in the spiral wool. After fine cleaning, a thin residual layer of solder remains, which prevents immediate oxidation of the soldering tip, thus providing a significant advantage over cleaning with a sponge.
