Assassin's Creed Valhalla transports players to the Viking Age and tells the story of the Viking warrior Eivor. The player-controlled Eivor can be either a male or female warrior, depending on the player's choice. Additionally, players represent their character in various decisions that impact the future of the community. Different choices in combat, politics, and conversations steer the story in unique directions.

Leaving Norway behind, Eivor leads his crew across the icy sea to the green lands and fertile fields of England. England, consisting of warring kingdoms, provides an ideal environment for capable Vikings who are skilled not only in farming and raiding but also in the noble art of combat. The gameplay mechanics also include a more versatile technique for dual-wielding, allowing for the use of various combat styles. Furthermore, players can utilize the crews of their longships to conquer different regions and gather their riches.

However, the Saxons, such as King Alfred of Wessex, do not make it easy for the Vikings and condemn these newcomers as godless heathens. Eivor must do everything possible to ensure the survival of his people.
