Martina (Leni Deschner) lives in a high-rise housing complex in Berlin. When her mother is on shift work, she has to help out alongside school and take care of her little brother. Then, the talented thirteen-year-old gets the chance for a scholarship to the prestigious Johann-Sigismund-Gymnasium in the idyllic Alpine town of Kirchberg. Upon her arrival, the tough Jo (Lovena Börschmann Ziegler), boxer Matze (Morten Völlger), and little Uli (Wanja Valentin Kube) make it clear what rule governs school life: the city kids at the boarding school and the "externals" from the rural area do not mix; on the contrary, they are enemies, and this has been the case for generations. The adults can't change this either: the good-natured headmaster Justus Bökh (Tom Schilling) tries to please everyone, while the strict principal Kreuzkamm (Hannah Herzsprung) doesn't get far with her discipline and is also the mother of external leader Ruda (Franka Roche). The mysterious non-smoker (Trystan Pütter), who lives a drop-out life in a train car, doesn't get involved at all. Martina just wants to learn and stay out of trouble, but she quickly finds herself in the middle of it, as the "internals" constantly clash with the rough Ruda and her clique. Although she must pass the exams to secure the scholarship, Martina can't abandon her new friends. The plan to resolve the ongoing conflict with a joint theater performance at the year's end fails. The divide between the two groups is simply too deep. Only a dramatic accident changes everything...
