The filter diameter of 67 mm is the same as that of all other Tamron lenses for Sony E-Mount (full-frame). The optical design includes several special glass elements that ensure excellent imaging performance of the lens. The very short minimum focusing distance of just 85 cm further expands photographic possibilities. The lens utilizes Tamron's newly developed VXD linear motor focus mechanism, which allows for fast and very quiet autofocus. The lens housing is weather-sealed, and dirt and fingerprints on the front lens can be easily removed thanks to the water- and grease-repellent fluorine coating. Additionally, the lens is compatible with Sony's proprietary camera functions, such as Fast Hybrid AF or Eye Detection AF, and offers a range of advanced features that guarantee high usability and fantastic image results.

When stopped down by one stop, the Tamron 2.8/70-180 mm Di III VXD delivers very high resolution.
... On the APS-C sensor we measure very similar tendencies. At 70 mm and aperture 2.8 the contrast is too low, but the edge drop is extremely low. Stopped down, the lens delivers a very good result over the entire image field - with slightly more edge fall-off. At 112 mm all values are slightly worse, this is especially true for the contrast at f/2.8, but stopped down this focal length is also very usable...
