The ultra-wide-angle zoom lens benefits from a detailed, innovative design that ensures outstanding image quality across the entire zoom range and right to the edge of the frame. The model features three exceptionally precise XA (Extreme Aspherical) lens elements, including the largest XA element ever produced for an Alpha lens. Together with a further aspherical element, these XA elements suppress astigmatism, coma and field curvature right up to the edges of the image. There are also three ED (extra-low dispersion) glass elements and two super ED glass elements, which minimise chromatic aberrations, ensure a consistently clear image and prevent distracting colour fringing. A floating focus system divides the focus group of the lens into two independently controllable groups, which ensures both excellent close-up performance and maximum sharpness at any distance. This system also helps to ensure a constant minimum focusing distance of 0.28 metres over the entire zoom range. As the lens is internally focused, its length remains constant and the centre of gravity hardly shifts, so that it is always perfectly balanced in the hand. The characteristic bokeh effects of Sony's G Master lenses are achieved by fine-tuning the spherical aberration properties during both the design and manufacturing process. At the same time, the extremely high surface precision of the XA elements ensures effective suppression of onion ring effects and, in combination with a nine-blade circular diaphragm, further enhances the remarkable beauty of the bokeh effects. The FE 12-24 millimetre F2.8 GM uses four extremely fast original XD (Extreme Dynamic) linear motors to fully exploit the speed performance of current and future camera bodies. Two motors for each focus group of the lens ensure responsive, precise autofocus.
