Product details
The Bismarck was, at its time, the largest and most modern battleship in the world, alongside the Hood, weighing 42,343 tons. On May 24, 1941, it sank the largest British battlecruiser, the Hood, with a direct hit from the fifth salvo of its 38 cm guns during a naval battle together with the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen at the pack ice boundary off Greenland. Launched on February 14, 1940, at Blohm and Voss in Hamburg, it was the most modern ship and a prestige project of the German Navy, alongside its sister ship, the Tirpitz. With a length of 251 meters, its mast reached 52 meters above the water surface. A total of 17,450 tons of steel were used for armor protection. The newly designed heavy artillery fired 800 kg projectiles up to a distance of 34.2 km, capable of penetrating 350 mm armor up to 21 km. While the Prinz Eugen sustained no hits during the battle on May 24, the damaged Bismarck, with its bow hit, headed towards a French port. In the subsequent pursuit by British ships and aircraft, the ship was rendered combat ineffective after a torpedo hit on its steering gear and was sunk by numerically superior forces of the Home Fleet on May 27, 1941, approximately 800 km off the French coast. Of the 2,092 men on board, 115 survived.
