The first thing I did was to reduce the inner setting of the grinder from 6 to 3, and the outer setting between 8 and 10. This is with freshly roasted beans that are medium roast. Of course, every bean is different, and the adjustment is always a bit tedious at the beginning. The inbuilt grinder is not comparable with a Eureka or other top standalone grinders, for example, but quite OK for an introduction to this rabbit hole.
As my wife doesn't want to dose and dose every day, this is a perfect compromise. She can dose&tamp automatically, but I use a Sage dosing funnel + WDT and then also tamp with the built-in tamper, which is very practical. Without the dosing funnel, it is not possible to remove the portafilter without tamping first, otherwise half the coffee will fall out.
If you want to go the manual route to practise, I recommend buying a bottomless portafilter, dosing funnel and IMS basket (24 or 26mm).

Now already a few weeks in use. Replaced our Jura fully automatic machine after approx. 3 years. The Jura machine would have had to be repaired for the second time for about CHF 500. For this money, you can get almost 3/4 of the Barista Express Impress. At the beginning, we were a little sceptical, because the effort for a coffee is a little bigger. However, the much better taste makes up for it! A fully automatic machine is always very difficult to clean. Some parts can only be cleaned by a specialist. You can taste this. Normally, even hot water has a coffee taste. We wanted something with less of this problem and are absolutely satisfied. From my side, a clear buy recommendation, even if you have to put a little time into the perfect coffee for your preferences = try it out.

For me, it's the right mix between automation and adjustability. If I want, I can "fiddle around" with the various settings and experiment. During the week, however, good espresso comes out at least as quickly as from a capsule machine.
I'd recommend this machine if you don't want to bother with the pre-heating time.
I had a Rocket appartemento before this one, and as a coffee lover, it's not much different from a barista in terms of extraction.
