Excellent pen. Personally, the original pen of the SP3 fits me even a little better than this one, but those are details.

I bought this new pen for my Surface Pro 3 (intended and designed for the SP4) because it is supposed to be even better and more practical. In contrast to the "old" pen, this one has a magnetic strip and now sticks better to the Surface. Better, but not really good or firm, i.e. the pen still detaches relatively easily from the device during stronger movements and then falls to the floor (and thanks to Murphy, always on the tip!).

The only new control button is on the side of the pen opposite the clip (the old one has two buttons, one for erasing, the other for selecting). The clip of the new pen therefore now presses lightly on the crook between thumb and forefinger when writing. Not bad, but simply unintentional and not ideal (no one would hold a normal pen turned this way).

With the new pencil, erasing is done by turning it around and moving the end of the pencil over the screen (i.e. more or less like the classic office pencils with an eraser at the end). This is very intuitive, but the constant turning clearly takes longer and the erasing movement is much less precise than erasing with the tip of the pencil while pressing the button (as with the old pencil) due to the thick end. In any case, I kept unintentionally erasing strokes other than the intended ones.

Conclusion: after a short trial period, I have "ruefully" returned to the original SP3 pen, as I write more comfortably and quickly with it and, above all, can correct more precisely and reliably. In my experience, anyone who does not need the higher number of pressure levels (probably only graphic artists and draughtsmen) is better off with the "old" pen.

The other features (especially the precision!) of the pen are just as excellent as those of the old pen and it is great to write with it!

    Pro

    • Magnetic strip
    • intuitive erasing with pen end

    Contra

    • Eraser end works rather imprecisely
    • only one button
    • Opening to change or insert batteries requires quite a bit of force

The Surface 3 pen with two buttons suits me better

The Surface Pen Pro 4 feels less comfortable in my hand than the Surface for the Pro 3. The single (long) button is not very ergonomic and interferes with writing. Turning it over to erase interrupts the flow of writing.

    The
magnetic grip is not very secure. The pen does not adhere strongly enough and can become defective if it falls on the tip. I therefore also clamp this pen to the keyboard with the clip.

The pen came with the tip set, but I don't use it. After testing, I changed back to the original tip.

Sensitivity and accuracy when writing are very good.

The battery was already dead on delivery. Replacement batteries in AAAA are still a rare commodity today and are only available to order almost everywhere (not included in the rating).

In terms of price, I find the pen clearly overpriced at almost CHF 70.

    Very Good

Very good to use, fits well in the hand and initialises immediately without complicated procedures.
