SMR (Shingled Magnetic Recording) = write speed collapses when you fill the disk!

I bought the 5 TB Lacie Rugged USB-C. A Seagate ST5000LM000-2AN170 was installed.

When sequentially writing large amounts of data, the hard drive initially behaves inconspicuously: The first terabyte was written with 110
    MB/s.

But after the first ~3.5 TB were on the drive, the data rates collapsed to an average of about 31 MB/s (with strong fluctuations, often much slower), even when writing sequentially!

The hard disk uses a technique called SMR (Shingled Magnetic Recording) without declaring it. This allows a 4TB hard disk to be sold as a 5TB hard disk, but the data has to be written in a very specific way - this results in the hard disk having to "reorder" large amounts of data every time a file is changed, which of course takes time.

The test I did was still an ideal case for the hard drive - the drive wasn't even full and I was writing to it for the first time. Even SMR could achieve good performance in this case! The real problems will start when the drive is completely full for the first time, some of the data is erased, and it needs to be replaced. Then the write speed will be much worse.

Unfortunately, only noticed when the return period was already around. None of the tests shown by Digitec pointed this out, they probably all just "test" if the case looks nice.

    WASTE

At first I was quite satisfied, but over time the hard drive had more and more problems connecting to the USB cable. And it's not that I take the hard drive with me all the time for mountain biking or similar "shaking" activities. No, it just sits in the drawer, and when I use it (almost every day), it is connected.

Then recently it wouldn't turn on at all, except very briefly when I gently pushed the plug in different directions. I tried for HOURS to somehow fix it in position as soon as I could so that I could access the data - to no avail!

So I took the screwdriver, thinking that if I opened it up, I could maybe push the plug in a little deeper, and thus temporarily fix the loose contact.

Well, I was amazed when I found an adapter from internal to external. Simply plugged it in. As if you couldn't have made a USB-C connection directly to the hard drive!

I removed the thing, connected the hard drive to the internal cable and now it works without any problems!

So much for the "external" hard drive. I'll never buy it again!

They buy a load of Seagate BarraCudas, stick the cheap adapter on it, put their rubbish coat around it, including a floating ring from the "Super Designer", who nobody knows, and then, magic bus, it becomes an external hard drive!

    Pro

    Cool part

Start with a quick format and you're ready to go. Storage space without end, the thing is simply awesome.
With USB 3.0 and USB-C both have a good transfer speed and are absolutely recommended!
    Also works with mobile phones
    that have USB-C ports.

    Robust, beautiful design, compact, handy

With the USB C plug, you need to know that it has to click into place when you plug it in. It has a special mechanism to hold it in place.
    Otherwise a great product.
    Highly recommended
